Depression Inside the Body

Depression impacts not only the mental and emotional issue but a physical one as well as this disorder affects both the limbic and endocrine system.

The limbic system in the brain regulates activities such as emotions, physical energy and sex drives plus the stress response. Within the limbic system, the hypothalamus controls the functionality of the pituitary gland which in turn regulates key hormones. The hypothalamus is located at the base of the brain is responsible for basic functions. Other structures within the limbic system linked to emotional reaction are the amygdala and hippocampus.

Researchers observe depression impacts the limbic system – the aforementioned brain regions in particular. They’ve also found changes to three neurotransmitters in depressed persons: Dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. The three navigate the body’s response to cues of appetite, emotions, sleep, stress and sexuality.

Depression also affects the endocrine system in the body, which creates hormones and releases them into the blood stream. One hormone for example, cortisol, is a stress hormone released by the adrenal glands. It flows in excess in the bloodstream of depressed individuals.

Causes Of Depression

Depression may be caused by a number of factors. Many professionals believe that physical changes in the brain may play a role in bringing about such a condition. Other causes may be a hormonal imbalance or a family history of depression.

Grief and loss may trigger an episode of depression, such as the death of a family member or loved one. Instances of domestic violence or rape may also cause unresolved emotional trauma, leading to depression. Regardless of the cause, the sooner treatment at a rehab for depression begins, the better the outcome can be.
