Mental Health Treatment

Women commonly experience mental health symptoms, which can negatively impact their ability to function in their daily lives. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported that common symptoms of mental illness experienced by women include:

  • Irritability
  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Alcohol and/or drug abuse
  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or sadness that doesn’t go away
  • Withdrawal from family and friends
  • Hearing or seeing things that are not there
  • Digestive problems
  • Body aches and headaches
  • Low energy
  • Changes in appetite and/or weight
  • Changes in sleeping or eating habits
  • Thoughts of suicide

Women are disproportionately affected by clinical depression – also referred to as major depressive disorder, somatic concerns and anxiety disorders – compared to men, and have high rates of comorbid disorders, reported the World Health Organization (WHO).

Certain types of mental illness including premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) – which can contribute to symptoms like mood swings, irritability and feelings of hopelessness – can specifically affect women.

Women are also faced with a number of social and environmental factors, including stress, childcare and work, which can increase their motivation to drink alcohol and/or use drugs excessively. This can contribute to the development of a substance use disorder.  Our rehab center specializes in the treatment of addiction in addition to other mental health conditions and co-occurring disorders.

Specialized Treatment of Trauma

About 29 percent of women living in the U.S. have also been negatively affected by rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner, reported the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Physical and/or sexual violence is a factor that increases a woman’s risk of developing a mental disorder called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Using a trauma-informed approach, Sovereign Health of Arizona’s clinical treatment team provides compassionate care to women who have been victims of rape, physical violence and/or stalking, as well as other types of traumatic events. Trauma-informed therapists at Sovereign Health of Arizona’s Chandler facility also offer interventions specific for the treatment of trauma and PTSD, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
